Branch Manager for Mining and Stone Industry project


The Branch Manager for Mining and Stone Industry project was initiated by a policy recommendation for hiring an extractive industry specialist in the current Centres for Economic Development, Transport, and the Environment. The policy recommendation was devised by a workgroup set by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to examine the operational preconditions of the extractive industry. The project was started in 2009 as a joint venture between the Regional Council of Lapland, the former Employment and Economic Centre of Lapland, and the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy. The project period is from 1 June 6 2009 to 31 July 2012. The Branch Manager for Mining and Stone Industry operates in the Regional Council of Lapland, which is the organisation in charge of the implementation of the project.

 

The central objective of the project is to promote and coordinate the development of the mining and rock industry as well as the related infrastructure, logistics, work force, education, research and business networks-based operations.

The tasks of the Branch Manager for Mining and Stone Industry include:

  • Coordination of the development operations and strengthening of the mining cluster
  • Expert tasks and participation in workshops related to planning, project and land use operations
  • Monitoring the development of the industry, reporting and communication
    • Industry reports
    • Comments on funding
    • Expert opinions on the projects
    • Industry events and expert meetings
  • Drafting the industrial strategy for Lapland


The project period is from 1 June 2009 to 31 July 2012. The Branch Manager for Mining and Stone Industry operates in the Regional Council of Lapland, which is also the organisation in charge of the implementation of the project.

 

Mining and rock processing industries are extremely important in the Finnish regions of Lapland, Kainuu, Ostrobothnia, and North Karelia, in terms of both livelihood and regional policy. The precious metal and mineral wealth resources in Lapland are extensive. There are several ongoing ore prospecting and exploratory drilling operations underway in various parts of the region. The regions of North Karelia, Southwest Finland, Uusimaa, Southeast Finland and Kainuu have extensive expertise in processing natural stone.
